Purpose The purpose of the HERO project, Helping Education Reach Out, was to create a type of road, an electronic highway, that would join Pattonville and Jennings School Districts' fourth and fifth grade students to create a collaborative, electronic learning environment. By electronically linking school districts with a diverse ethnic and cultural makeup, we hoped to create a learning environment that would foster an open exchange of knowledge, feelings and attitudes.
What We Did
The
foundation for discussion was multi-cultural literature, focusing
on the thematic strands of Self, Family, Community, and Global Citizenship.
Instructional units were created by the third, fourth and fifth
grade teacher participants. The student participants electronically
discussed the universal themes contained in the literature: i.e.
self-worth, celebrations, heroes, family, perseverance, honesty,
responsibility, discrimination, poverty, prejudice, violence, etc.
This electronic communication ocurred via the use of a First Class
E-Mail and conferencing system.
