Summary:

Eleven-year old Clara was sold to another plantation and separated from he momma.  She became a seamstress.  As she learned more about the Underground Railroad, she thought of a way to show how to find it.  She pieced together scraps of material with scraps of information to sew into a quilt.  The quilt was a secret map used to help slaves to freedom.  Clara eventually followed the map to her momma and onto freedom in the North.

Use a large piece of construction paper or a grocery bag.  Lightly draw a map of you neighborhood.  Use scrap material-fabric, yarn, string, paper, dried noodles, peas, beans, sticks, toothpicks, small rocks, bottle caps, magazine pictures, etc. to glue onto the map.

Using KidPix or any other drawing program, create a family quilt.  Choose family members, names, dates, and pictures of events or memories to add to the quilt.
