Adverb - modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb

 

Examples

In the Old West, mail service was unbelievably slow.

Until 1858, California had very irregular mail service.

It often took two to three months for a letter to arrive.

Finally, the Butterfield Overland Mail Service began.

Stagecoaches carried passengers and mail east to west.

Now, imagine a trip to California in 1858.

You eagerly board the train in St. Louis.

After nearly 150 miles, you transfer to a stagecoach.

Hold on tight, because the ride is really rough.

You and the mail travel almost constantly day and night.

Sleep is practicaly impossible.

The coach eventually jolts to a stop in San Francisco.

Shakily you climb off.

You're totally exhausted.

Just think, your trip took only twenty four days.

A Pony Express rider comes quickly into view.

A fresh rider and a horse stand nearby.

The first rider brings his horse sharply to a halt.

Then the new rider grabs the mail, leaps onto a waiting horse, and is off at top speed.

Riders carried mail 1,996 miles from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California and then brought mail back.
